Homeschool Rocks!

MY STORY

Hey there, I’m Danielle. I’m a homeschooled teenager, with the lovely Cris Lyn, aka my Mom, as my Mom, Mentor and Coach.

I’m on a journey of learning about the world, learning to love those around me, and—most importantly—falling in love with learning itself. Like most kids probably did, I switched from public school to homeschool, then charter school, then back to homeschool.

In those two years that I attended public school, the blur of the regular school days was overwhelming to me. Math left me confused. Why can’t we just solve problems the simple way? The instructions was way too complicated. I prefer the simple, old-school way. Then, Language and reading felt too easy. I needed a more challenging books to read. Like thick books with think plot or non-fiction books.

Then, most lessons in public school boiled down to staring at words on the whiteboard that were somehow supposed to teach us. Oh no, I’m not in school for some staring skills. By summer, after ten months, I realized I hadn’t learned much that truly helped me grow.

So I went back to homeschool. If you think it was all walk in the grass from there, you’re wrong. We were actually learning about the same as public school. Old things everyday got boring, and the kitchen table felt like our school desks from regular school.

Then there is our family’s aha moments

Turns out it wasn’t what we were learning or where we were learning, but how we were learning. We adapted the real way to homeschool: Our way.

We decided to make some switches, from the science book to planting our own garden. Who needs a history book when you can visit a national park full of history itself? Plus, I get to learn with the nature. Don’t forget life skills like baking and following recipe instructions, which a fun (and tasty) alternative for math.

Then, there is stock market where I learned how to invest, learning about business and money, reading books for growth, learning to play musical instruments, learning life skills through sports and competition, learning to use technology in a positive way in our learning. The list goes on. The possibilities are limitless. Everyday, as we discover new ways to learn, we get more excited.

Changing our normal homeschool day was like putting together a puzzle, except we got to choose where the pieces went. So many memories were made on our handcrafted adventures to museums, public gardens,  campgrounds and competitions. Learning has become a family lifestyle.

The best part, we found a community that learns almost the way as ours. So, we get to embody our learning with our community. It is like being raised in a village.

Were our homeschool days flawless? Definitely not, but the years I’ve been homeschooled are years I will cherish for life.  Across said years, I’ve picked up tips, insights, and perspectives on homeschooling to be able to share with others.

This is what this blog is for! A perspective of a homeschooled teenager.
